The Folk of the Air Wiki

SPOILER WARNING

May contain plot details

Jack of the Lakes is a kelpie and one of the solitary Folk. He accompanies Oak on his quest.

Physical Description[]

In his person form, Jack of the Lakes has brown hair the color of mud in a riverbed and eyes the murky green of stagnant water.[1]

In his horse form, he is sharp-toothed and black as ink, with a mane that ripples like water and a murky green sheen on his coat.

Personality[]

Jack of the Lakes is a playful character, breaking the tension during highly stressful situations, such as his first appearance. However, he seems to be this way on purpose, as he is shown to swallow his comments after he betrays both Oak and Suren. He is instantly familiar with Oak and Suren, mouthing off wordplay to their names which irritates Tiernan. However, he is also petty, misliking the way Tiernan spoke to him in the hotel, and helping Suren 'free' Hyacinthe as revenge to make Tiernan look like a fool.

Biography[]

The Stolen Heir[]

Jack of the Lakes is hired to transport Oak to the Court of Moths. Once there, he is stopped by Tiernan from swimming in Queen Annet's waters, for he may find himself in the dangerous Undersea.

Later, Jack of the Lakes finds Suren on her way to talk to Hyacinthe. In exchange for one of her silver foxes, Jack of the Lakes distracts the guards surrounding Hyacinthe so Suren can speak to him. Later, Jack of the Lakes confesses to Revindra that Suren freed Hyacinthe, Gwen and a merrow spy from the Undersea, leading to her apprehension.

Upon Oak, Wren and Tiernan's departure from the Court of Moths, Jack of the Lakes kneels and offers up himself to Oak for punishment. Oak responds in kindness, saying they are even now with Oak no longer owing him any favours. Jack of the Lakes offers his friendship and ability to transport him to the Ice Needle Citadel if needed, though Oak rejects this. Jack of the Lakes tells him he can call on him any time for any help, before departing.
