The Prisoner's Throne is the second book in The Stolen Heir duology by Holly Black.
Blurb[]
An imprisoned prince. A vengeful queen. And a battle that will determine the future of Elfhame.
Prince Oak is paying for his betrayal. Imprisoned in the icy north and bound to the will of a monstrous new queen, he must rely on charm and calculation to survive. With High King Cardan and High Queen Jude willing to use any means necessary to retrieve their stolen heir, Oak will have to decide whether to attempt regaining the trust of the girl he’s always loved or to remain loyal to Elfhame and hand over the means to end her reign—even if it means ending Wren, too.
With a new war looming on the horizon and treachery lurking in every corner, neither Oak’s guile nor his wit will be enough to keep everyone he loves alive. It’s just a question of whom he will doom.

Teaser 1:
Jude only gives her brother a grim smile. “Well then, what a wonderful opportunity for you to prove your loyalty and die.”
Oak can feel the sharp edges of her nails as they dig into his neck. He shivers with sensation. He doesn’t want careful anymore than he wants safe.
“Have I ever told you how much you sound like Madoc when you talk about murder?” Cardan asks, opening one eye. “Because you do.”
Teaser 2:
Paper covers his dresser and desk. Books are piled in untidy stacks, shoved back into their shelves at odd angles. On his bedside table, a volume is open facedown, its spine cracked.
The prince has very poor book etiquette. It has been remarked on before.[1]
Teaser 3 (from @TheNovl Twitter/X):
“She's bitten me before, you know,” he says with a grin. “It wasn't so bad.”
Teaser 4:

Teaser 5 (from @TheNovl Twitter/X):
“No need to worry. I don't plan on kicking the bucket anytime soon, and neither does Cardan.”
Oak turned to the High King, who shrugged elegantly. “Seems hard on pointy boots, kicking buckets.”
Teaser 6 (from @TheNovl Twitter/X):
It has become such an automatic reaction to pain, for him to mask it all with a grin. Oak, laughing all the time. Pretending nothing hurts. A false face hiding a false heart.

Teaser 8 (from @TheNovl Twitter/X):
“I want,” she says. “That's my problem. I want and I want and I want.”
